Author Ken Smith decried the state of contemporary American English. Mr. Smith’s book, Junk English, argues that our language is filled with sloppy grammar and pretentious words and phrases that favor style over substance and vagueness over accuracy. Mr. Smith admits that the book is not a grammar or style text and that the observations and assessments contained in the book are completely judgmental. He declared that everyone uses ‘junk English’ regardless of economic status or level of education. The examples he cited were found in newspapers and magazines, radio and television, advertisements and editorials, as well as everyday speech. close
