Senators John McCain (R-Arizona) and Russ Feingold (D-Wisconsin) and Representatives Marty Meehan (D-Massachusetts) and Chris Shays (D-Connecticut), sponsors of campaign finance reform legislation, spoke to reporters about recent enforcement rules passed by the Federal Election Commission. At issue was the manner in which commissioners crafted regulations weakening several parts of the law. They said that they were likely to bring legal action against the commission, introduce legislation to end the commission, and demand that the law be enforced as written. Senator McCain also responded to reports that he was holding up judicial nominations in order to influence the appointment of new commissioners. Following their remarks they answered questions from the reporters. close
