Mr. Freeman discussed his book Sailors To The End: The Deadly Fire on the USS Forrestal and the Heroes who Fought it, published by William Morrow. In it, Freeman gives an account of the events on July 29, 1967. According to Freeman’s research, the deadly fire on the USS Forrestal began with a rocket that was accidentally fired into an aircraft occupied by pilot John McCain. As a result, a chain reaction of explosions from other bombs on surrounding planes led 5,000 men to fight for their lives. Freeman argues that the Forrestal sailors, who were blamed for the fire and the 134 fatalities, were not at fault. Instead, Freeman insists that these sailors were unrecognized heroes who not only saved the Navy’s first super carrier, but also saved many lives on board. Joining author Gregory Freeman at the event were several sailors of the USS Forrestal who confirm that after 35 years of ambiguity, the true story of what happened that day in 1967 is finally being told.
