Witness testified regarding the proposed leasing of 100 Boeing aircraft by the U.S. Air Force. The planes would be used as airborne refueling tankers. At issue was whether or not the proper processes were followed in getting approval for the deal. Committee members questioned the urgency of the need for the tankers, and why the tankers should be leased instead of purchased. The witnesses pointed out the successes of airborne refueling, and the need to update the Air Force’s aging air refueling fleet. They said that the lease option might cost marginally more initially, but that the overall cost would be lower with the lease option than the purchase option. close
