Mr. Epstein talked about his book, Lincoln and Whitman: Parallel Lives in Civil War Washington, published by Ballantine Books. The poet first encountered the president in New York City on the way to his inauguration, and later would become a Lincoln supporter while living in Washington, D.C. during the Civil War. Among the events Mr. Epstein examines are Whitman’s attendance at Lincoln’s second-to-last speech, and Whitman’s writing of the poem “O Captain, My Captain” following Lincoln’s assassination. close
