Sociologist and author Jane Jacobs discussed her book Dark Age Ahead, published by Random House. The book examined five key aspects of modern life that the author saw as the pillars of a successful culture, all of which seemed to her to be in serious decline. These pillars were scientific progress, family, taxes and government, pursuit of higher education, and self-policing. Ms. Jacobs wrote that at the base of this downfall were racism, the widening gap between the wealthy and poor, and environmental problems, which the author claimed if left unaided would result in cultural decay. After the discussion, Ms. Jacobs responded to questions from the audience. close
