Professor Lal talked about his book, In Praise of Empires: Globalization and Order, published by Palgrave Macmillan. He argued that empires have played a decisive role throughout history in providing the political stability essential to economic and social progress. He examined the current debates over economic and cultural globalization and concluded that the U.S. has a vital imperial role to play in maintaining the global Pax. He argued that if the U.S. doesn’t begin to recognize its power, that power will eventually shift to another emerging state such as China or India. He was joined in discussion by the other panelists, moderated by Mr. Eberstadt. close
