The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s evening newscast, called “The National,” focused on activity in the Canadian House of Commons. Earlier in the evening, Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin narrowly won a vote of confidence from members of the House of Commons 153 to 152, with the speaker casting the tie-breaking vote. The prime minister, who was leader of the Liberal Party, had been under criticism because of an ongoing inquiry into government corruption under the previous Liberal government. Conservative Opposition Leader Stephen Harper was trying to force Martin to resign and call for a new election. The newscast was hosted by Peter Mansbridge from Ottawa. close
