The Pageturners book discussion group at the Naperville Public Library discussed Senator Barack Obama’s memoir Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance, published by Three Rivers Press. The book was reissued in paperback following Sen. Obama’s widely talked-about speech at the Democratic Convention in July 2004. The book tells the story of how Sen. Obama came to terms with his identity as the son of a black African father and a white American mother. The program is introduced with a video clip from Sen. Obama’s book talk at a bookstore in New York City on November 23, 2004. The book group members discussed their evaluations of the book as well as their impressions of Barack Obama, his character, his political future, and what his book revealed about the state of racial relations. They also examined their own reactions to his story.
