Moderated by Professor Walters, panel members discussed the importance of extending the Voting Rights Act of 1965, some provisions of which expire in 2007. Among the issues they addressed were current strengths and weaknesses of the Act, the likely impact on minority groups and immigrants of a failure to reauthorize the legislation, redistricting procedures, and election procedures used to define eligible voters. After their presentations the panel members answered audience members' questions. close
