On May 31, 2006, New York’s highest court, in Albany, heard oral arguments in four same-sex marriage cases: Hernandez v. Robles, Samuels v. New York State Dept. of Health, Matter of Kane v. Marsolais, and Seymour v. Holcomb. At issue was granting marriage licenses to same-sex couples based on the New York constitution’s guarantee of “equality, liberty and privacy for all New Yorkers.” The challenge to the state’s marriage laws resulted from an appeal filed by 44 same-sex couples who lost their cases in the lower appeals court. In this portion the attorneys arguing for same-sex marriage were shown.
