Members of the House of Representatives debated H.R. 5, the Striker Replacement Act, which would prohibit businesses from firing striking employees and hiring permanent replacement workers in their place. Supporters of the bill claim it will strengthen the ability of laborers to strike for improved wages and working conditions. Opponents of the legislation claim it will encourage strikes even under excellent working conditions, will protect strikers who commit violence during their strike, and will violate the rights of businesses to hire their choice of employees. The bill passed the House in a vote of 247-182, short of the number of votes needed to override a presidential veto. close
