The House Budget Committee heard testimony from Richard Darman, director of the Office of Management and Budget, on the Office of Management and Budget’s mid-session review. The budget review, released Monday, predicted the 1991 fiscal year budget deficit to be smaller than anticipated, due to costs including the cost of the savings and loan bailout being accounted for in fiscal year 1992. The budget deficit was predicted to be the highest ever in 1992, amounting to $348.3 billion. The 1991 federal budget deficit was predicted to amount of $282.2 billion. The Office of Management and Budget no longer predicted a budget surplus in 1996, which would be President George H.W. Bush’s final year in office. close
