General Abizaid testified about U.S. military operations in Iraq, security concerns in the country, the state of sectarian violence, and future U.S. strategy in the region. In his testimony he opposed setting deadlines for withdrawal or redeployment of forces from the country. In arguing against a timetable for troop withdrawals, he told the committee that he and other U.S. commanders needed flexibility in managing U.S. forces and determining how and when to pass on responsibility to Iraqi forces. He proposed that U.S. troop levels could stay steady at approximately 141,000 but may have to rise temporarily to train and advise Iraqi military units.

Some exchanges between General Abizaid and committee members were contentious and reflected divisions over future policy in Iraq and perceived messages from the electorate from the 2006 midterm elections. close
