Joshua Kendall talked about his book The Man Who Made Lists: Love, Death, Madness and the Creation of Roget’s Thesaurus. The book recounts the life of Peter Mark Roget, the creator of the thesaurus that was first published in1852. Mr. Kendall described Roget as obsessed with writing lists and contends that this practice saved him from suffering from the same severe depression that inflicted his mother, sister and uncle. He talked about the classification system used by Roget and showed the audience some primary source documents in Roget’s hand. Following his prepared remarks he answered questions from members of the audience. close
