David Paterson was sworn in by Chief Judge Judith Kaye as the 55th governor of New York State at a joint session of the State Assembly and State Senate in the Assembly Chamber. Following his warm and humorous introductions of many New York dignitaries and his family, he spoke of unity and civility in government. He said the principal challenge faced by the legislature will be the economic downturn and its probable affect on the state budget. He promised a “brighter future.”

Governor Paterson moved up from lieutenant governor after his predecessor Democratic Governor Eliot Spitzer resigned over a prostitution scandal.
