Financial advisers and university officials testified about the state of U.S. credit markets, federal oversight of student loan practices, the cost and availability of student loans, as well as the impact of recent turmoil in other credit markets on the student loan industry. The hearing focused on recent trends in which approximately 50 lending companies, representing 12 percent of the market, had stopped issuing government-backed student loans. close
