Bruce Schulman and Julian Zelizer talked about the book they co-edited, Rightward Bound: Making America Conservative in the 1970s, (Harvard University Press, March 15, 2008) co-edited by Bruce Schulman and Julian Zelizer. History professors, Bruce Schulman and Julian Zelizer, present a collection of essays that recount how the American conservative movement rose in the 1970s. According to the editors the decade has often been cast as a footnote between the politically active 1960s and 1980s but Mr. Schulman and Mr. Zelizer contend that fissures in the liberal movement, migration of a segment of the population to the Sunbelt, and the activity of conservative grass roots organizations laid the groundwork for conservative ascendancy. They were joined in discussion of the book in a panel moderated by Nolan Mccarty. After the discussion the panelists responded to audience members' questions. close
