Marshall Goldman talked about his book Petrostate: Putin, Power, and the New Russia, published by Oxford University Press. In his book he recounts Russia’s economic collapse in 1998 and its re-emergence only a decade later as a financial force due to its energy wealth. Mr. Goldman reports that Russia is the world’s largest producer of petroleum and the second largest exporter. He details the efforts Vladimir Putin made to re-nationalize Russian oil and how these profits were used to pay off the countries national debt. Mr. Goldman discussed his book with Wayne Lord and then responded to questions from members of the audience.
