The House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asian and Pacific Affairs heard testimony on contingency plans for the U.S. military in East Asia following a vote by the Philippine Senate denying the extension of the lease of military bases in the Philippines to the U.S. military. Philippine President Corazon Aquino was said to be considering a national referendum on the extension of the lease, according to Subcommittee Chairman Stephen Solarz (D-NY), but it was likely the U.S. military would have to leave its bases in the Philippines. Representatives of the Departments of State and Defense testified on the causes for the vote by the Philippine Senate and discussed the effect of the closure of the four U.S. military bases in the Philippines. close
