The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence heard testimony from senior CIA officials during the sixth day of the confirmation hearings for Robert Gates to be CIA Director. Hal Ford, former CIA analyst, spoke about Gates' influence and pressure on CIA analysts to conform during the mid-1980's and the effect of that pressure on intelligence findings. Mr. Ford also questioned the nominee’s “integrity of judgement” and lack of knowledge about the Iran-Contra affair. Larry Gershwin, a current CIA Intelligence Officer, talked about Gates' encouragement of alternative points of view at the CIA in the mid-1980's. Mr. Gershwin described the nominee’s desire to foster links between the academic and business communities to enable external review of intelligence analysis. close
