Nelson Mandela, leader of the African National Congress, a South African political party, and former President Jimmy Carter spoke in a ceremony honoring the recipients of the Carter-Menil Human Rights Awards. Mr. Mandela lauded the work of the award’s recipients and thanked the Carter-Menil Foundation for supporting the cause of human rights around the world. President Carter delivered his annual State of Human Rights Address after posthumously honoring six priests killed in Central America while working for human rights. Noting the advances made by human rights in recent years, President Carter deplored continuing violations of human rights by oppressors around the world. He noted several tyrannical regimes as examples of human rights violations, but also noted the violation of human rights of the poor by the wealthy even in democratic societies across the globe. Ms. Menil gave Mr. Mandela a special monetary award following President Carter’s remarks. close
