Greg Melville talked about and read passages from Greasy Rider (Algonquin Books, October 21, 2008), an account of his 3,900-mile trip across the United States in a 1985 Mercedes station wagon that he retrofitted to run on vegetable oil. Mr. Melville wound his way across the country and throughout his trip made stops to inspect how private industry and the government are attempting to use alternative energy sources. These stops included touring the Fort Knox army base that runs a geothermal heating system, the Google headquarters that uses solar-power, and an “eco-friendly” Wal-Mart. Mr. Melville responded to audience members' questions following his remarks.
Greg Melville is the author of 101 Best Outdoor Towns: Unspoiled Places to Visit, Live and Play. His writing has appeared in several publications, including National Geographic Adventure, Popular Science, and Outside. close
