Dr. Richard Besser, acting director of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), addressed reporters and responded to questions on the investigation of swine flu cases. He said that the disease in the United States appeared less severe than the outbreak in Mexico, where more than 1,600 cases have been reported and where the suspected death toll has climbed to 149. He also said the CDC was cautioning against non-essential travel to Mexico and talked about preparations to distribute anti-viral medications if necessary.

Many of the questions for Mr. Besser were posed by telephone. close
