Witnesses testified on legislation that would require the Government Accountability Office to audit the Federal Reserve. Federal Reserve General Counsel Scott Alvarez said audits of monetary policy by the U.S. Congress could lead to higher interest rates and reduced confidence in central bank policy. Thomas Woods testified in favor of auditing, saying that the Federal Reserve needed to be more truly independent and transparent. close
