Mark Moyar talked about his book A Question of Command: Counterinsurgency from the Civil War to Iraq (Yale University Press; October 20, 2009). In his book he argues that good military leadership, not “winning hearts and minds,” is the key to winning counterinsurgency wars. Professor Moyar came to this conclusion after studying counterinsurgency efforts going back to the American Civil War. Then Tom Ricks of the Washington Post provided commentary. Mr. Moyar responded to questions from members of the audience. This book event was hosted by the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, October 21, 2009.

Mark Moyar, a professor at the Marine Corps University, is the author of Triumph Forsaken: The Vietnam War, 1954-1965 and Phoenix and the Birds of Prey: Counterinsurgency and Counterterrorism in Vietnam.
