Mr. Kunder briefed reporters on U.S. efforts to provide humanitarian assistance to Somalia. He is the highest ranking administration official to visit Somalia in the last year and spoke about his recent trip to Eastern Africa and answered reporters' questions about Somalia. After the ouster of the Somalian president 18 months ago, the nation had been split by civil unrest and wars between rival clans. These conflicts had combined with the drought in Eastern Africa to create dire famine conditions. Recent international relief efforts had been hindered by clan leaders. The International Committee of the Red Cross has estimated that as many as one third of the people of Somalia may die of starvation by the end of the year if relief is not provided. close
