Panelists talked about the history of the use of computers and technology to predict election results. They traced the integration of communication and computer technologies in news rooms since 1952 when CBS News used a new electronic computer, the Univac, to model the outcome presidential election between Dwight Eisenhower and Adlai Stevenson. The computer accurately predicted an Eisenhower landslide with only 5% of the vote in. But the newsmen did not believe it since this contradicted the polls. They also talked about the development of social media and how it might potential shape future elections. close
