Representative Lewis, who was chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) from 1963 to 1966, recalls his life of activism in the hopes of imparting his experience to a new generation of activists. In 1965, he and Hosea Williams led more than 600 peaceful protesters across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Ala., in a demonstration of the need for voting rights in the state. The marchers were attacked by state troopers in a confrontation that became known as “Bloody Sunday.” The incident helped hasten passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965
