Representative John Lewis (D-GA) talked about his book, Across That Bridge: Life Lessons and a Vision for Change, in which he presents lessons he learned as a leader of the civil rights movement. Representative Lewis, who was chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) from 1963 to 1966, recalls his life of activism in the hopes of imparting his experience to a new generation of activists. In 1965, he and Hosea Williams led more than 600 peaceful protesters across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Ala., in a demonstration of the need for voting rights in the state. The marchers were attacked by state troopers in a confrontation that became known as “Bloody Sunday.” The incident helped hasten passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 close
