The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration (SAMHSA) released a report on current illicit drug users and rates. It found marijuana use rose from 2007 to 2011 among youth aged 12 to 17, young adults aged 18 to 25, and adults aged 26 or older. In addition, prescription drug abuse among 18 to 25 year olds had declined in the past month by 14 percent. However, rates remained unchanged for children aged 12 to 17 and adults aged 26 or older for non-medical use of prescription drugs. SAMHSA Administrator Pamela Hyde noted that substance abuse accounts for more deaths than from HIV/AIDS, suicides and traffic accidents. close
