The Republican National Committee hosted a luncheon at the Capitol Hill Club to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Alveda King sang and talked about being glad to be a Republican, but that so much transcended politics. Representative James Sensenbrenner (R-WI) talked about his involvement in the passage of the Voting Rights Act and the need for Congress to fix the portion of the act overturned by a Supreme Court decision earlier in 2013. Several speakers, including Robert Brown and Bob Woodson, criticized both Republican and Democratic parties for not working together and called for not just outreach to minorities but for “uplifting those at the bottom.” Reince Priebus said the Republican Party needed to do more in its outreach to minorities, in part by emphasizing its history on civil rights.
The ceremonies included the Pledge of Allegiance, national anthem, and prayers. Songs included “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” close
