Federal Reserve Chair Ben Bernanke held a news conference following a meeting of the Fed’s Open Market Committee. He explained the central bank’s decision to start tapering its economic stimulus program known as quantitative easing due to gains in the job market. He also discussed the Fed’s updated forecast which calls for record low interest rates even after the unemployment drops below 6.5 per cent. Other topics included a retrospective look at the financial crisis and transparency of the Federal Reserve decisions. Chair Bernanke also praised the bipartisan budget deal, saying it put the country in a better position economically. This was his last scheduled news conference before the end of his term at the Federal Reserve. close
