C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their “2014 LCV Cities Tour” in Salem, Oregon, from February 3-6 to feature the history and literary life of the community. Steven Green talked about his book, The Bible, the School, and the Constitution: The Clash that Shaped Modern Church-State Doctrine, in which he chronicles the debate over school prayer and the public funding of religious schools that peaked just after the Civil War, between 1863 and 1876. Professor Green argues that during the 19th century, Protestants believed schooling should have a moral if not religious basis, in response to the growing Catholic presence which they felt threatened their culture.
