Tom Smoot talked about his book, The Edisons of Fort Myers, in which he discusses Thomas Edison’s love of Fort Myers and his impact on the growth of the city. Edison first visited the town in 1885, purchasing a winter residence known as Seminole Lodge that he and his family would use until his death in 1931. His Fort Myers home provided a setting for the many notables who visited Edison, including Henry Ford, Harvey S. Firestone, and John Burroughs.
