Historian James Oakes talked about his book, The Scorpion’s Sting: Antislavery and the Coming of the Civil War, in which he examines a plan intended to produce a peaceful end to slavery prior to the Civil War. The proposal called for the utilization of federal mandates to surround slave-holding states with a “cordon of freedom” that would encourage slaves to escape in large numbers, which in turn would harm the Southern economy and push states to electively abolish slavery. close
