Rula Ghani, the first lady of Afghanistan, spoke about the role of women in her home country, and the need to support and encourage them. She described her life growing up as a Lebanese Christian and her family. Among her remarks, she said the roots of Islam had respect for women but that she was seeing a shift in modern-day Islam. Regarding humanitarian aid for Afghanistan, she said it “is not the answer” and that agencies should instead focus on development. After answering a few questions from moderator Nina Easton, she took questions from the audience. close
