Prime Minister John Major read a statement issued by Buckingham Palace to the members of the House of Commons on the marital separation of Prince Charles and Lady Diana of the House of Windsor. The royal couple would not divorce, and because of that, Lady Diana would remain eligible to become queen should her husband ascend to the throne.
