The Supreme Court heard oral argument in McDonnell v. United States, docket number 15-474, a case concerning what kinds of official conduct amount to corruption. Former Governor Robert McDonnell (R-VA) was convicted of public corruption in January 2014 and faces two years in prison. In his appeal he challenged the current reach of federal bribery laws, particularly a federal law that bars public officials from accepting money or gifts in exchange for “official acts.”

Judgment: Vacated and remanded, 8-0, in an opinion by Chief Justice Roberts on June 27, 2016. close
