The Senate Special Aging Committee held a hearing focusing on disaster planning and response to ensure the health and safety of elderly Americans during emergencies. This discussion came after several residents of a Florida nursing home died after the facility lost its air conditioning in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. The committee heard from current and former federal and local officials involved in emergency management including Dr. Karen DeSalvo, a former New Orleans Health Commissioner, who talked about her experiences during Hurricane Katrina. close
