During that two month period ten years ago, the government took over the home mortgage holding companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and the investment bank Lehman Brothers declared bankruptcy, prompting the stock market to drop more than 500 points. Also, the Bush Administration announced the Troubled Asset Relief Program, or TARP, which was initially rejected by the House of Representatives, but later passed in early October. close
