The Supreme Court heard oral argument in Madison v. Alabama, which concerns the fate of a 67-year old inmate in Alabama on death row for more than 30 years and suffering from several severe medical issues. Vernon Madison was sentenced to death for killing a police officer in 1985. While in prison, he had several strokes that left him unable to remember the crime he committed. He was scheduled to be executed in May 2016; however, he appealed to a state court regarding his physical and mental health capacity. The court denied his claim so his lawyers went to the Eleventh Circuit. They ruled he was incompetent to be executed. In November 2017, the Supreme Court reversed the Eleventh Circuit decision, and the state rescheduled the execution for January 2018. Lawyers once again appealed to the state court, which again ruled against Mr. Madison. close
