European Union Foreign Affairs Chief Federica Mogherini delivered remarks to members of the European Parliament on the death of Saudi journalist and Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Turkey. She told members that what was needed was a clear and transparent investigation by the Saudi government and full cooperation with Turkish officials. Following her remarks, members from several European political parties gave speeches, many focusing on human rights violations in Saudi Arabia and Turkey’s handling of the investigation. A few days after this debate, the European Parliament passed a resolution imposing an arms embargo on Saudi Arabia in response to the killing. close
