Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan delivered the commencement address at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. The former Boeing executive served as deputy defense secretary starting in 2017, until he was appointed acting secretary earlier in 2019. He told the graduates and their families he does not take lightly his responsibility to put armed forces in harm’s way, and will only do so when absolutely necessary. close
