Yale University law Professor Justin Driver talked about the 1956 “Southern Manifesto,” a document written by congressional members opposed to the 1954 Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education, which ruled that segregated schools were unconstitutional. Mr. Driver analyzed how Strom Thurmond and other contributors argued for segregation in what they named “The Declaration of Constitutional Principles.” The Supreme Court Historical Society hosted the lecture in the Supreme Court chamber. Justice Elena Kagan offered introductory remarks. close
