Members of four police departments from cities around the country delivered presentations on the enactment of community policing programs in their areas during a symposium on community policing sponsored by the National Institute of Justice. The speakers discussed how community policing initiatives were formulated and introduced into their communities, and spoke on the effectiveness of the programs. Community policing programs seek to cut down crime by creating a stronger bond between citizens and the police and creating a community atmosphere by uniting diverse elements of a population. The speakers responded to questions from members of the audience following their prepared remarks. close
