Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Dr. Robert Redfield spoke at a U.S. Chamber of Commerce virtual event on the federal response to the coronavirus pandemic and the recent surge in cases across the country “December and January and February are going to be rough times,” said Dr. Redfield. “I actually believe they’re going to be the most difficult time in the public health history of this nation, largely because of the stress that it’s going to put on our health care system.” He warned that the U.S. could see as many as 450,000 total deaths by the end of January 2021, but that number would largely depend on how seriously Americans took mitigation measures. Dr. Redfield reflected on the U.S. response to the virus and how the country could be better prepared for a future pandemic. He also praised the innovation that was spurred by the global pandemic and touted the apparent efficacy of a number of vaccines. close
