New York University’s Brennan Center for Justice held a virtual discussion with former Senate staffer Adam Jentleson on his new book, Kill Switch: The Rise of the Modern Senate and the Crippling of American Democracy. In the book, Mr. Jentelson argues for reforms to the filibuster, a Senate rule that effectively requires 60 votes to pass most legislation. He also talked about the history of the filibuster and minority rights in the Senate, and made the case that the modern filibuster runs counter to the Framers' intent and establishes a precedent of minority rule, rather than being used as a tool to foster debate on legislation. close
