Mr. Johnson spoke about the importance of Title 42, which was issued in March 2020 and allows the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director to stop people from coming into the United States because of the risk of spreading COVID-19. Mr. Johnson said Title 42 was “critical” to ensuring ICE had “adequate space for social distancing” in its detention centers, and he warned lifting it could create additional pressure on the immigration system. Other topics discussed included available space in detention facilities, tracking illegal immigrants once they are in the country, COVID-19 vaccination efforts at detention facilities, and enforcement priorities for the Biden administration.
