John Logan was a three-term senator from Illinois and a general during the Civil War, having served under William Tecumseh Sherman and Ulysses S. Grant. Though he fought for the Union, Logan was an outspoken supporter of slavery and fugitive slave laws. During his Civil War service, his views changed and he became an advocate for the rights of African Americans. Gary Ecelbarger discussed how this change came about and the impact it had on his life and career. Mr. Ecelbarger is the author of Black Jack Logan: An Extraordinary Life in Peace and War. The Illinois State Society of Washington, D.C. hosted this program and provided the video. close
