Participants discussed the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), and upcoming trade talks with Japan and the importance of the successful ratification of each of the subsequent legislation that will accompany there implementation. They argued that congressional ratification of NAFTA is essential to further negotiations on international trade. Opponents argued the contrary position, disputing the environmental, and job-related benefits of the agreement. close
